Purpose:

This presentation explores how sociocultural awareness can enhance addiction treatment by addressing disparities, mitigating implicit bias, and implementing best practices for equity and effectiveness in care.

Objectives:

1. Examine disparities in addiction treatment

o Review current data on racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic inequities in access, retention, and outcomes.

o Identify systemic barriers that contribute to unequal care.

2. Analyze the role of implicit bias in treatment

o Define implicit bias and explore how it manifests in clinical decision-making and therapeutic relationships.

o Consider the impact of bias on client engagement, trust, and treatment efficacy.

3. Highlight best practices for socioculturally attuned care

o Discuss trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based approaches.

o Explore interventions that integrate cultural humility, client-centered values, and community engagement.

o Provide strategies for self-reflection, continuous education, and organizational change.
